There are over 700 miles of open trail to discover in the network, with even more to come. (The end goal is 1,500 miles of shared use trails in the region, so we’re nearly half way!)
Here are some ways you can start to explore our growing network of trails. Please use these itineraries to help guide your visits to area trails and the communities that line them. We feel confident that you’ll end your next trail trip thinking “I Heart Trails.”
What’s included:
“Story Maps” – Themed itineraries that allow you to pick and choose based on where you are in the region.
“Trail Trips” – Self-guided itineraries for specific trails. Simply print and fold or use the mobile version.
This is the epic story of three dozen bridges and 15 restored rail tunnels along area trails. The routes include the Montour Trail, Towpath Trail, Allegheny River Trail, North Bend Rail Trail and others. Railroad and canal era relics are also highlighted. You’ll see a coaling tower, railroad turntable, canal locks, a floating bridge, replica coke oven, tunnels, and dozens of bridges, new and old.
It’s been said that “all trails lead to beer and ice cream,” so we’ve mapped the best beer and ice cream along the Industrial Heartland Trails. Most are hand-crafted on site, with some exceptions for places with standout atmosphere. Extra points to the Towpath Trail for having the most overall sites!
This region for its industrial heritage continues to innovate. Fiestaware, custom pocket knives, marbles, and pottery…these are just some of the many products being created along the Industrial Heartland Trails. The story unfolds from site to site. Most of the sites are near open trails but will require driving to get to them.
As much as we love land trails, the lakes and rivers along the way are half the appeal. Rent a kayak. Try stand up paddle boarding…or sailing. Do a pedal/paddle trip. Or simply enjoy some waterfront dining and take in the scenery.
Unlike the other Story Maps, this one is meant to help you get your bearings in terms of open trails throughout the region. See the great intro video for an overview and then use the Story Map to begin designing your next trip. Here you’ll find parking recommendations, sections of open trail, information on trail groups, and more.
Use our mobile version of eight self-guided Trail Trips, complete with links to the various sites or print your own (“Print and Fold” below) to have a handy print copy when you visit.
Always check business hours and days of operation before visiting and check the local trail websites for any updates on trail conditions. Most of the trips allow you to ride as much or a little as you prefer.
